The NetZeroCities programme attracted more than 300 proposals from cities across Europe. Following a highly competitive evaluation process, only 26 proposals, representing 48 cities, were selected to participate in this pioneering initiative. Ioannina and Kozani stand out as the only Greek cities participating through the “METRONOMOS” proposal, highlighting the importance of cooperation between municipal authorities, research institutions and specialised consulting firms in promoting sustainable solutions for modern cities..
Within the framework of the programme, innovative climate action initiatives will be implemented, creating synergies between local authorities and the Institute for Environmental Research and Sustainable Development of the National Observatory of Athens, ensuring that these cities will become models of innovation and sustainability at European level.
The Institute for Environmental Research and Sustainable Development, with its expertise in urban resilience and sustainability, has created a tool for the systematic collection and analysis of climate-related data and satellite technologies to monitor the impacts of climate phenomena. The tool uses big data and information from the Copernicus programme to monitor energy performance in buildings, the use of solar energy and electricity consumption, providing comprehensive support for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Break Even Consulting plays a key role in the development and pilot implementation of the METRONOMOS platform in the cities of Ioannina and Kozani, ensuring its functionality and adaptation to the specific needs of both cities. At the same time, it participates in project management and coordination, the preparation of technical specifications, and the development of strategies for the sustainable and long-term expansion of the platform. In addition, it contributes to the dissemination of results and the strengthening of citizen participation.
The success of the “METRONOMOS” proposal demonstrates that Greek innovation and cooperation can play a decisive role in shaping sustainable cities and achieving Europe’s climate neutrality goals.
